Forward Deployed Engineer salary 2026: UK, US and India by employer tier

The forward deployed engineer salary question has no single answer, but the sources agree on a shape. According to Levels.fyi, median total compensation is $216,250. Indeed shows an average London base of £115,677. Levels.fyi puts the India median at ₹16,78,945. Employer tier moves all three.

Key takeaways

  • Why self-reported total compensation and posted base pay give different answers for the same job title.
  • Where the US, London and India ranges sit, with the sample sizes and dates behind each.
  • How employer tier, mainly through equity, explains most of the spread, and how to read an offer against it.

Two datasets, two windows

Two kinds of data circulate. The first is self-reported pay, where people who hold the job submit it. The second is pay taken from job adverts. They measure different things, over different periods, and mixing them without saying so is the commonest error in salary articles.

This article uses total compensation to mean base salary plus equity plus bonus. Levels.fyi splits it into those parts, which is why its figures run higher than advert-based ones. Indeed’s US figure comes from 1.5k salaries taken from job postings over the past 36 months, so older, lower postings sit in today’s average. Recruiting from Scratch tracks 612 current postings with a posted salary range, as of September 2026, a much shorter window.

Titles add noise. The role began at Palantir in the early 2010s and is now a standard hiring track at AI-native companies and enterprise technology firms, so it appears as forward deployed engineer, forward deployed software engineer and AI forward deployed engineer. Salary sites often file these separately.

Forward deployed engineer salary in the US

Levels.fyi gives a median total compensation of $216,250, with a 25th percentile of $180K, a 75th of $290K and a 90th of $363K. Its base median is $175,000, and median equity is $40,000. The cash is the steady part. The equity is where the variation lives.

The window matters even on one site. The Levels.fyi United States page, last updated 8 September 2026, shows a $205,000 median. That is a month earlier than the $216,250 figure, which was last updated on 4 October.

Advert-based sources land close on base pay. Indeed’s average base is $178,908, with a low of $115,679 and a high of $276,699. Recruiting from Scratch reports a median posted base of $200K, with the middle half between $168K and $225K. A fair US reading is a base of roughly $175K to $200K and total compensation of roughly $205K to $216K at the median, with a long upper tail.

UK and London figures

London data is thinner. Indeed reports an average of £115,677 from 56 salaries, updated 20 September 2026, and a range from £70,015 to £191,119. SalaryExpert gives an average of £113,538, with £79,583 at entry level and £128,610 at senior level.

Glassdoor shows how much the title filter matters. Its forward deployed software engineer page for London shows an average of £139,962, built from base pay of £89K to £120K plus £37K average additional pay, from 42 salaries as of September 2026. Its plain forward deployed engineer page shows an average of £36,197 from 59 salaries as of February 2026. That page also lists monthly-paid entries, which probably drag the average down. Treat £36,197 as a data artefact, not a market rate.

By employer, Glassdoor lists Palantir in London at a median of £115K for the forward deployed engineer title and ElevenLabs at £181K. C3 AI shows a median of £89K. An Indeed listing for Google in London advertises £104,000 to £106,000. A working UK range is therefore roughly £80K to £130K at the middle of the market, with £180K and above at the best-paying employers.

India figures

India shows the widest disagreement. Levels.fyi gives a median total compensation of ₹1,678,945, with a 25th percentile of ₹1.59M, a 75th of ₹3.13M and a 90th of ₹4.15M, last updated 5 September 2026. Its base median is the same figure, and median equity is zero. Equity only appears at the top of the distribution.

Other sources differ by window and method. SalaryExpert gives an average of ₹27,86,591, last updated July 2026. Salary.com gives ₹14,07,380, as of April 2025. The Salary.com figure is the oldest in this article, and the role has changed a great deal since.

Live adverts show the spread directly. One Bengaluru listing on Indeed offers ₹7,00,000 to ₹10,00,000 a year. Another, for a Bangalore role at AiPrise, lists ₹35,00,000 to ₹45,00,000. Same title, roughly four to five times apart. The difference is the employer and the work, not the job name.

How employer tier changes the number

Tier is the best single predictor, and equity is most of the difference. A compensation report from Perspective AI says frontier labs pay 2.0 to 3.5 times what Palantir’s classic role pays at the same level, with the gap sitting in equity. The report is a secondary analysis and rates several of its bands as medium confidence, so read it as direction, not as a quote.

  • Frontier labs: mid-level total compensation of $385K to $510K, with 60 to 70 per cent in equity.
  • Applied AI startups at Series B and later: $250K to $340K at mid-level.
  • Fortune 500 enterprise AI teams: $190K to $240K at mid-level, with 15 to 25 per cent in equity.
  • Palantir’s classic role: a $215K median.

Posted pay is more modest. In Recruiting from Scratch’s company table, Salesforce shows a $248K median from 4 roles and Google $183K from 29 roles. Those samples are small, so use them to sanity-check an offer, not to set a target.

What the pay is for

The premium follows the work. These engineers sit inside a customer’s business, build working systems and then hand them over. AIU built the Certified Forward Deployed Engineer (CFDE)™ as the first certification standard for that role. A credential does not set a salary, and no employer is bound by it.

What employers pay for is visible in how the role is judged. AIU teaches how engineers are measured:

AIU teaches that Forward Deployed Engineers are measured on three things: deployment velocity, customer success and product feedback quality.

When comparing offers, check four things. Is the figure base or total? How much is equity, and how is it valued? Which window does the source cover? Does the title match the work? A £120,000 base in London and a $216,250 total in the US are not the same kind of number, and an honest range keeps them apart.

For anyone building toward this role, the practical step is to learn the work the measures describe.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average forward deployed engineer salary in the US?+

Sources agree on a shape, not a point. Levels.fyi reports median total compensation of $216,250 and a 75th percentile of $290K. Indeed reports an average base of $178,908. Total compensation includes equity and bonus, so it runs higher than base pay.

How much does a forward deployed engineer earn in London?+

Indeed reports an average base of £115,677 in London, within a range of £70,015 to £191,119. Glassdoor’s forward deployed software engineer page for London shows a higher average of £139,962, which includes additional pay. Employer and title account for most of the gap.

Why do forward deployed engineer salary figures disagree so much?+

They measure different things over different periods. Some report base pay and others report total compensation with equity. Indeed averages postings across 36 months, while other sites show recent snapshots. Titles are also filed separately, and samples can be small, so a sample of 56 London salaries should be read with caution.
