Forward Deployed Engineer salary in India 2026

There is no single forward deployed engineer salary in India. Aggregators put the median near ₹16 to ₹21 lakh a year, but employer-posted bands run from about ₹7 lakh at small firms to ₹70 to ₹90 lakh at a US-headquartered AI company hiring in Bengaluru. Who employs you explains more than your title does.

Key takeaways

  • What the main salary aggregators report for forward deployed engineers in India, and why they disagree.
  • How pay differs across services firms, global capability centres (GCCs) and US-headquartered AI companies hiring remotely or in India.

Forward Deployed Engineer salary 2026: UK, US and India by employer tier

What the aggregators say about forward deployed engineer pay in India

Start with the three public sources that publish India figures, and treat each as a different kind of evidence.

According to Levels.fyi, median total compensation in India is ₹1,678,945, with the 25th percentile at ₹1.59M, the 75th at ₹3.13M and the 90th at ₹4.15M. That is roughly ₹16.8 lakh at the median and ₹41.5 lakh at the 90th percentile. Levels.fyi data comes from submitted compensation, so it skews towards larger, better-paying employers.

Glassdoor splits by city. In Bengaluru, Glassdoor reports a typical range between ₹962,500 and ₹3,075,000, based on 15 salaries submitted as of October 2026. For New Delhi, Glassdoor gives a range between ₹1,100,000 and ₹1,620,000, from 11 submissions. Fifteen and eleven data points are thin, so read these as direction, not precision.

The third source is a modelled average. Salary.com reports an average of ₹14,07,380 as of April 2025. Its own level table moves from ₹12,83,131 at entry to ₹15,47,025 above eight years of experience. Real offers do not flatten like that, which suggests a smoothed estimate.

Services firms: wide titles, lower and tighter bands

Indian IT services and consulting firms have adopted the forward deployed engineer title for client-embedded AI delivery. Listings on Indeed show Kyndryl and EXL hiring forward deployment engineers, and Axtria stating a mission of building a workforce of 1,000 FDEs embedded across pharma and life sciences organisations. Services employers are hiring at volume, and volume tends to mean bands set for a delivery workforce rather than a scarce specialist.

The pay signals are modest. In the listings on Glassdoor, Accenture’s Hyderabad role shows ₹491K to ₹800K and Persistent Systems’ Pune role ₹442K to ₹703K, both labelled as Glassdoor estimates. Capgemini’s Mumbai seat appears at ₹384K to ₹457K, also an estimate. Those are modelled, not employer-stated, and they sit far below the Levels.fyi median.

Employer-provided figures are higher where the seat is senior. One Mumbai listing from Kuber and Company shows ₹2M to ₹5M and describes owning customer deliveries from discovery to verified production cutover. At the junior end, an Indeed listing in Bengaluru offers ₹7,00,000 to ₹10,00,000 a year and asks for 6 months to 1 year of experience. A services seat can be an entry route into the work, with pay to match.

GCCs and big-tech India teams: what the data can and cannot show

A GCC is an in-house India centre run by a global company. Several of them now advertise forward deployed roles. Google Cloud lists a Forward Deployed Engineer II role in Bengaluru, and its Google Careers page sets minimum qualifications of a degree and one year of software development experience, with machine learning, NLP, generative AI agents and DevOps experience. The seat is described as an embedded builder bridging frontier AI products and production-grade reality inside customers.

Published pay for these seats is the weak point. Pay for GCC seats appeared on none of the pages read, so no reliable GCC band can be quoted. Glassdoor does show estimates, and some look implausible. It lists a Staff Forward Deployed Engineer role at Google in Gurgaon at ₹960K to ₹1M (Glassdoor est.). That figure looks low for the seniority, which is a reason to distrust modelled estimates for big-company India roles.

The practical advice is to ask. GCC offers usually combine base pay with bonus and stock, and the Levels.fyi split shows why that matters. Its India data lists base at the 90th percentile of about ₹37.3 lakh against total compensation near ₹41.5 lakh, with equity and bonus adding to the difference. Compare total compensation, not base alone.

Remote and US-headquartered AI companies: the top of the range

The highest employer-stated India band found in this research comes from a US-headquartered AI company. Cartesia’s Bengaluru forward deployed engineer role shows ₹7M to ₹9M, provided by the employer, which is ₹70 to ₹90 lakh. The same Indeed listing shows ₹70,00,000 to ₹90,00,000 a year. The listing asks for 4+ years of experience building and operating production software systems, plus enterprise constraints such as authentication, networking and security reviews.

That is one posting, not a market rate. The pattern is still worth noting. Companies with US revenue and a small India team pay against a global talent pool, and the role comes with fewer people to share the customer load. Ciroos, a seed-stage startup headquartered in California, lists an India role asking for 3 to 6 years of experience in SRE, DevOps, production engineering or technical support, without a published figure.

No India-specific band for the frontier labs turned up. US figures exist, and Fortune reports that compensation for some forward-deployed roles at Anthropic can reach $400,000. Those are US numbers and should not be converted into an expectation for an India hire.

Why the spread is so wide

Three things stack on top of each other. The first is title inflation: the same label covers a junior implementation seat and a senior customer-facing builder. The second is employer type, as above. The third is demand moving faster than definitions.

On demand, Fortune cites Lightcast data showing forward-deployed postings up more than 1000% between January and August 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier. It also reports median advertised salaries above $188,000, against roughly $145,000 for traditional software engineers. These are US postings. KDnuggets adds a caution: a 5,000% increase from a small base can still describe a small market.

Large buyers are building their own capacity. Forbes reports that Microsoft committed $2.5 billion and 6,000 headcount on 2 July and that Salesforce has committed to a team of 1,000 FDEs. Where that hiring lands geographically is not stated, so India readers should not assume a share of it.

How to read an offer

Ask what the seat is measured on before comparing numbers. A seat measured on tickets closed is a support job with a new title. A seat measured on production outcomes is closer to the role the pay data describes. The measures AIU teaches for the role are these:

AIU teaches that Forward Deployed Engineers are measured on three things: deployment velocity, customer success and product feedback quality.

Then check four things in writing. Is the figure base or total? How much is equity or bonus, and on what schedule? Does the role travel to client sites or work in a client’s time zone? Skypoint’s Bengaluru listing, for example, requires candidates to work primarily in Pacific Time to collaborate with US customers, which is a cost to the engineer that the salary figure does not show.

Last, look at the experience requirement. Pulsora’s India role asks for 3 to 7 years in forward deployed engineering, solutions engineering, technical consulting or similar roles. Seats that ask for that background are priced above the juniors in the services data, even when the title is identical.

AIU teaches the role through the Certified Forward Deployed Engineer (CFDE)™. A credential does not set an offer. Seat type, seniority and employer tier do, as the figures above show.

For readers who want the wider comparison with UK and US pay by employer tier, the parent article above covers it. For India, the safe reading is a wide band: low single-digit lakhs at the junior services end, mid-teens to low twenties at the aggregator medians, and a small number of posted bands far higher at US-led AI companies.

If you are weighing the move into this role, the next step is to see how the programme teaches the work.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average forward deployed engineer salary in India?+

There is no single average. According to Levels.fyi, the median total compensation in India is ₹1,678,945, with the 75th percentile at ₹3.13M. Glassdoor reports a Bengaluru median of ₹2,150,000 and a New Delhi median of ₹1,410,000, each from a small number of submissions. Treat these as a range of roughly ₹14 to ₹22 lakh at the middle.

Do services firms pay forward deployed engineers less than product companies in India?+

In the listings reviewed, yes. Glassdoor estimates for Accenture, Persistent Systems and Capgemini roles sit between about ₹3.8 lakh and ₹8 lakh. By contrast, Cartesia’s employer-provided Bengaluru band is ₹70 to ₹90 lakh. The estimates are modelled and the Cartesia figure is one posting, so the direction is clearer than the exact gap.

Can a forward deployed engineer in India earn a US-style salary?+

A few posted India roles at US-headquartered AI companies reach ₹70 to ₹90 lakh, but US figures do not transfer directly. Fortune reports Lightcast data putting the US median advertised salary above $188,000. No India-specific band for the frontier labs was found, so US pay should not be used as an expectation for an India offer.
